The main road to Devon and Cornwall from London is blocked in both directions after a serious crash.
The collision, on the A303 in Somerset, was first reported by roads and traffic monitoring service Inrix at 11.20am and police have confirmed that the incident involved one vehicle.
The car has crashed into the the central reservation on the eastbound carriageway, between Wincanton and Leigh Common.
In an update at 11.42am, Inrix reported: « A303 in both directions blocked, queueing traffic due to serious accident, one vehicle involved from A371 (Wincanton) to B3081 (Leigh Common).
« Road now blocked both directions following an accident on the eastbound carriageway which has resulted in the vehicle colliding into the central reservation. »
A tweet from Avon and Somerset Police said that the road is currently closed on the eastbound carriageway and down to one lane on the opposite side.
Inrix reports: « A303 Eastbound closed, queueing traffic due to serious accident, one vehicle involved between A371 (Wincanton) and B3081 (Leigh Common). Congestion to the Clapton Lane turn-off.
« The road remains closed heading past Wincanton towards Mere. The westbound side of the road re-opened around 12:00. »
In a tweet, Avon and Somerset Police say: « Police, fire and ambulance services are at the scene of a single vehicle collision at the A303 Wincanton, near the Wiltshire border.
« The road is currently closed in the eastbound direction and down to a single lane westbound. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible. »
