The Cincinnati Reds continued to shuffle their roster as they hit the halfway point in their season, and they designated outfielder Phillip Ervin for assignment on Friday.
Ervin, the club’s first-round pick in the 2013 MLB Draft, was out of minor league options and was 3-for-35 at the plate this season without any extra-base hits. The Reds have seven days to trade Ervin or place him on waivers.
Along with the Ervin roster decision, the Reds placed starting pitcher Wade Miley on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder strain, one day after he pitched four scoreless innings. Anthony DeSclafani was reinstated from the paternity list and reliever José De León was added to the 28-man active roster.

The Reds have designated three members of their Opening Day roster for assignment in the past four days: relievers Cody Reed and Pedro Strop, and Ervin. Any of those three players could remain in the organization if no team puts in a waiver claim for them.
« He absolutely has a role on any team, I believe, » Reds Manager David Bell said of Ervin. « He has a great skill set. It was just a tough roster move that we had to make. We’ll see how it turns out. It could turn out that he ends up in our organization. I really believe he will get another opportunity in the Major Leagues. »
Ervin raked against left-handed pitching last season, posting an incredible .349/.411/.628 slash line in 95 plate appearances with 12 extra-base hits. He was 2-for-21 against lefty pitchers this year.
He entered the season in a platoon with Jesse Winker, but Winker has emerged as an everyday starter after his success hitting against lefties. The Reds now have four outfielders on their active roster: Winker, Nick Castellanos, Shogo Akiyama and Mark Payton. Nick Senzel is on the IL and there is no update on his return. Michael Lorenzen hasn’t played an inning in the outfield this season, but he could be a late-inning defensive replacement.
It’s the second time Miley was placed on the 10-day IL this season. He missed about two weeks at the start of the season with a left groin injury.
Miley said he felt some shoulder tightness in the fourth inning Thursday on a cutter he threw to Keston Hiura. That’s why he exited after 64 pitches. Miley said an MRI showed a strain near his rotator cuff.
« It sucks, especially throughout my career, I haven’t had to deal with this very often, » Miley said. « In a way, not to be expected, but the way this whole thing started up in this weird season and the preparation. It was a little bit tougher for me. Hopefully, we can get through this, strengthen everything back up. I don’t think it’s major at all by any means. I think it’s something that I just got to get some strength in there, and it should be fine. »
De León, 28, allowed eight runs on four hits and four walks in his lone relief appearance this season, but the Reds like his potential and wanted to add an extra pitcher on the roster.
PLAYER POOL ADDITION: The Reds signed right-handed pitcher Jay Jackson and added him to their 60-man player pool. He will report to the alternate site in Mason.
Jackson, 32, had a 4.45 ERA in 28 appearances last season with the Milwaukee Brewers. He struck out 47 and walked 18 in 30â innings.
He spent the 2016-18 seasons in Japan and returned there this season. He yielded three runs and four hits in seven innings while striking out 12 for Chiba Lotte.
NEGRO LEAGUE CELEBRATION: The Reds will honor the 100th anniversary of the Negro Leagues during Sunday’s game against the Chicago Cubs. There was a league-wide celebration on Aug. 16, but the Reds had their game postponed after a player tested positive for COVID-19.
There will be cutouts of the Cincinnati Tigers Negro League team and Negro League players in the Baseball Hall of Fame in the seats, along with local players Chuck Harmon, Charlie “Whip” Davis, Don “Groundhog” Johnson and Ron “Bunny” Warren.

Mike Moustakas, who spent 12 years in the Kansas City Royals’ organization, went to the Negro League Museum in Kansas City soon after he was drafted.
« I’m a baseball fan in general so just to see the history of baseball in the museum was incredible in its own right, » Moustakas said. « Then to hear the stories and hear everything that these men went through just to play baseball and make it to the Major Leagues. You’ve got Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, Cool Papa Bell, these guys are some of the greatest baseball players to ever play the game. It was just an amazing experience to walk through. »
The Reds and Cubs will wear a commemorative Negro Leagues patch on their uniforms Sunday and the logo will appear on the bases and lineup cards.
