Houston Astros legend J.R. Richard, one of the best players in the organization’s history, passed away on Thursday. He was 71 years old.
Richard spent 10 seasons with the Astros, from 1971 to 1980. He went 107-71 with a 3.15 ERA and 1,493 strikeouts during his career. In 1979 Richard had 313 one-season strikeouts in what was considered an Astros record until he was broken by Gerrit Cole in 2019.
« Today is a sad day for the Houston Astros as we lose one of our franchise icons, JR Richard, mourn, « said an Astros statement. « J. R. will forever be remembered as the intimidating figure on the hill and as one of the greatest throwers in the club’s history. He stood side by side with club icons Larry Dierker, Joe Niekro and Nolan Ryan to form some of the best rotations in the club’s history.
Richard’s illustrious career was interrupted in 1980 when he hit one during pre-game practice Suffered a stroke. Despite his shortened career, Richard is still recognized as one of the best players in Houston history.

J.R. Richard was one of the best throwers of his generation. The 6-foot-8 right-handed man handled a fastball over 100 mph and fooled the thugs with a ridiculous breakball.
Richard might have been recognized as one of the best pitchers in baseball history if his career hadn’t been interrupted would have been. Regardless, he leaves an enormous legacy in Major League Baseball.
