CM – Indian cricket team for women under six qualifiers for the 2022 Commonwealth Games

DUBAI: Cricket is the first discipline to announce qualifying teams for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as the sport marks a milestone for re-entry into the prestigious multisport event, which runs from July 28th to August 8th Scheduled August next year.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) announced on Monday that women will play cricket for the first time and only play cricket for the second time in 22 editions. The first time this was an ODI for men competition in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, won by South Africa.

The six qualifiers joining the England home team in the eight-team Twenty20 competition are Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and a country from the West Indies. Due to their placement in the T20I team ranking of the ICC women, they secured the qualification on April 1, 2021.

According to the qualification process, the winner of a certain qualifying tournament determines which country from the Caribbean region can participate, as the Athletes represent their individual countries and not the West Indies, as would be the case at ICC events.

The last participating team will be decided by a qualifying tournament, which should take place by January 31, 2022. Details will be announced in due course.

At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, 4,500 athletes from 72 nations and regions will compete against each other on eleven spectacular days of sport. Birmingham 2022 will be the first major multisport event in history to award more medals to women than men.

Geoff Allardice, Acting General Manager of ICC, said: « We are incredibly proud and excited to be part of Birmingham 2022 and it’s a fantastic opportunity for us to expand the women’s game around the world.

« We are keen to keep the momentum going, with the 86,174 fans for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final last year We were at Melbourne Cricket Ground for the last year, and Birmingham 2022 is another global stage for us to showcase the women’s game. «

Cricket is a sport synonymous with the Commonwealth and we are delighted to have it back. « The games for the first time since the 1998 men’s competition in Kuala Lumpur.

England captain Heather Knight said: “We are very excited to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022 and offer a great opportunity for women -Cricket, in both England and Wales and around the world.

« With our confirmed direct entry into the competition, we are one step closer to the place in Birmingham and the prospect of a possible medal win will bring us to the Keep that in mind for the next 12 months. «

The Indian one Captain Harmanpreet Kaur said: « It’s great to get a seat in the Commonwealth Games. We’re barely able to do well after the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final in Australia last year. «
