JOSH LITTLE experienced the ups and downs of the Cricket World Cup in Utrecht when Ireland tortured the first of three Super League qualifiers against the Netherlands.

Little took his first ball a wicket and shortly afterwards another two to reduce the Dutch to 53-5, but the home side recovered to 195 bout 69 from Paul Stirling.

However, after 46 overs with 19 runs from the last 24 balls had fought to a winning position, the loss of Andy McBrine and Barry McCarthy to the bowling of Pieter Seelar in the following over the game swung back towards the hosts.

Simi Singh was out for 45, with 10 of five balls still needed, but after the last man pushed Craig Young a single, Little raised the hopes of the guests with an impromptu scoop past Fine Leg for four, only to miss the final delivery when attempting a replay.

Ireland ran a bye but only one mistake was missing to tie the score and force a super over and the Netherlands had their first ODI win over the Boys in Green since 2007 and 10 World Cup qualification points.

Lost skipper Andy Balbirnie tried not to hide behind a few lbw decisions against Harry Tector and Andy McBrine who turned the game with Ireland 18 of 23 balls with four wickets in hand.

« Losing those three early wickets didn’t help, » said Balbirnie. « We knew it was going to be a tricky place, and like the games [against Afghanistan] in Abu Dhabi earlier this year, none of our top assignments stayed with Paul Stirling, who was brilliant again. »

While Balbirnie den Praising 21-year-old Little for his sharp sayings that brought the speedster with his left arm 3:32, the Pembroke man will know that his choice of shot from the last ball was questionable at best, given the Dutch a man on the fine post leg limit.

The teams will meet again tomorrow (FR) when another home win will cause Ireland to worry about reaching the bottom of the 13-team leaderboard and dropping out of the next Super League instead to make it into the top eight to qualify for the 2023 tournament.
