Convicted wife murderer John Chardon dies in prison after ‘medical incident’

John Chardon, who was convicted of the manslaughter of his ex-wife Novy Chardon, died in a Brisbane prison

Chardon was found guilty in September last year, more than seven years after Ms Chardon went missing from the couple’s Gold Coast home in 2013

She disappeared hours after John Chardon received a letter from his wife’s divorce lawyer

Queensland Corrections released a statement confirming the death of a 73-year-old prisoner « after suffering what appears to be a medical incident at Wolston Correctional Center »

« The man went to the prison medical center, suffering from shortness of breath before declining rapidly, » the statement read

« QAS was present, but attempts by medical personnel, officers and paramedics to resuscitate the man failed »

Throughout his trial, Chardon has denied any involvement in his wife’s disappearance, an argument which was rejected by the presiding judge, Judge Ann Lyons

« Your ability to weave a calculated web of lies is of great concern … especially your ability to disparage and belittle your wife to others at every turn, and to paint yourself as a captain of industry and a great philanthropist, » Judge Lyons told me

During the proceedings, the court heard that the mother of two had been afraid of Chardon and was trying to establish her independence and separation from him

Chardon was also revealed to have a criminal history of multiple sexual offenses, including the rape of a teenager in the late ’90s and an offense against a child within six weeks of Novy’s death.

Chardon never revealed exactly how he killed his wife, but Judge Lyons noted that he must have received « help » to move Ms Chardon’s body and car the night she died.

The prosecution also noted that urine was found on the floor of the couple’s bedroom and that Chardon hired a carpet cleaning machine the next morning

It was also the same morning that Chardon suggested to his wife’s friend when she came to the house to check if Mme Chardon had not turned up for a coffee date

In his speech, Judge Lyons also condemned Chardon’s actions with her two children by Novy, who he made to believe their mother did not love them and had abandoned them

« The file must be corrected [and] at some point in the future, I hope the children of Novy read these condemnatory words and know that she did not give up on them – she loved them dearly, ”Justice Lyons said.
