Flurry of school bus cancellations to English public, Catholic schools

Parents with kids heading to English public and Catholic school should check their yellow school bus route with a flurry of cancellations Monday morning.

The Ottawa Student Transportation Authority warned last week that school bus service would change on Monday due to a “severe” shortage of drivers.

More OSTA routes were cancelled Monday morning due to an “unexpected driver resignation,” the Ottawa Catholic School Board tweeted, adding “please check OSTA’s website before heading to your bus stop this morning.”

OSTA had warned last week that some routes would have to be cancelled or re-designed, adding “many parents will likely need to find alternative transportation to get their children to school for the next few weeks until services stabilize.”

Operators typically have 555 yellow buses on the road serving 45 schools in Ottawa. As of Friday, the consortium was short by more than 100 drivers, resulting in the cancellation of 30 routes as of Monday until further notice. Some 2,360 students will not receive school bus transportation until more bus drivers become available.

“Please review your child’s info on the parent portal, then check the posted list on the website to confirm the route’s status regularly,” the consortium said.

“It is important that you maintain physical distancing and STAY with your child(ren) until the bus arrives in case of delays and cancellations.”
