Gentle warning: Fifita won’t win games on his own for Titans

BRONCOS

Broncos coach Peter Gentle has warned that boom back-rower David Fifita won’t be able to win games on his own when he joins the Titans next year.

The Gold Coast mostly contained Fifita well in their 18-6 win over Brisbane on Saturday night although he did crash over the line to almost score before losing the ball in the tackle.

Fifita will join the Gold Coast next year on a three-year deal with opposition teams sure to keep finding ways to minimise his impact.

« We know what plays Dave likes but we can’t… and the Titans when they get him here can’t rely on Dave to be a one-man team, » Gentle said.

« He can’t be a one-man team for us. People have to do some work around him.

« A lot of teams are doing their homework on Dave and leaving [their line] really early on him and getting up in his face.

« They are putting extra numbers on his side and we have to be better and exploit that. There are areas of Dave’s game that we are working on and I am sure Justin [Holbrook] will as well. »

Titans coach Justin Holbrook said he did not expect Fifita to turn up next year as some kind of saviour and agreed with the Broncos coach.

« He is just coming here to do his job in our side. Ash [Taylor] and Jamal Fogarty are doing a great job and we have got AJ {Brimson] there, so plenty of key guys in our side.

« Dave is just going to add to that next year and I am really excited about that. He is a great player. »

The Broncos attack was clueless at times against the Titans with last-tackle options and direction around the park lacking, but they did defend with grit and scrambled well.

« Defensively we have made some really good inroads but our attack tonight was way off, » Gentle said.

« We lacked composure and patience. You work on one area of the game and the other area starts to fall apart.

« This late in the year and short staffed as we are, we are trying to do the best we can. »

Young halves Sean O’Sullivan and Tom Dearden did struggle with their game management in attack and Gentle said it would « be gold » for the club to recruit a premiership-winning half next year who has been there and done that.

« The young blokes are trying hard, and that is all I can ask for, » Gentle said.
