Anthony DeSclafani leads Giants to victory over Astros
Anthony DeSclafani pitched eight scoreless innings, giving up just three hits, to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 2-0 victory over the Houston Astros. Despite inducing only six swings and misses, DeSclafani’s confidence and attacking style kept the defending champions at bay. Catcher Joey Bart praised DeSclafani’s fire and excitement, which he said the team fed off of. Camilo Doval finished up the game, but his casual pace caused anxiety and drama for the Giants, with Bart having to race out for mound visits twice to stop the clock.
DeSclafani’s success this season can be attributed to his attacking style, walking less than a batter per nine innings, and his groundball percentage, which is the best of his career. Opposing leadoff hitters are 1-for-17 against him with 15 strikeouts, and with men in scoring position, opponents are 3-for-21 this season. DeSclafani’s ankle injury from last season has been resolved, and he has been pitching like his old self since the start of spring training.
The Giants had plenty of chances to score, stranding 10 runners, but managed to get a run in the first inning via Thairo Estrada’s legs and another in the fourth inning with a double from rookie Blake Sabol. Brett Wisely had a terrific game at second base, showing notable range and making a nice play on a ball hit by Alex Bregman in the ninth. The team was also limited in right-handed hitters due to a stomach bug making the rounds in the clubhouse.
