Hail up to 13cm hits parts of south-eastern Queensland as dangerous thunderstorms roar


Hail up to 13 centimeters has been reported in Hillcrest, south of Brisbane, as parts of southeast Queensland are crushed by a series of very dangerous and « deadly » thunderstorms

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued warnings for residents of parts of Wide Bay, Burnett, Darling Downs and the Granite Belt

Nomenclature forecaster Kimba Wong said three very dangerous thunderstorms are currently moving east but more storms could develop

« One is just north-east of Toowoomba, another goes through the Lockyer Valley and another is just south of Ipswich towards Jimboomba at the moment, » she said.

« We’ve had some giant hail observations from this storm heading towards Jimboomba… around Gatton and also around Adare so very, very dangerous thunderstorms moving in the southeast right now

« It is possible that new giant hailstones are coming from these storms, as well as destructive gusts of wind exceeding 125 kilometers per hour »

At 1:17 p.m., the BOM issued a warning of severe thunderstorms that were developing rapidly, particularly south of Kingaroy

« Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce giant hailstones, destructive winds and heavy rains which can lead to flash floods over the next few hours, » BOM said

Earlier today, the BOM also warned of possible flash flooding in Brisbane, with more than 60 millimeters of rain expected to be poured over the city this afternoon

Storms are expected to spread across western Queensland, east of Dalby and Chinchilla in the Darling Downs and east of Clermont in the central highlands

Sydney’s Sutherland Shire was bombarded with 3cm hail at around 1pm and a warning is still in place for « big, maybe giant hailstones »
