Jaden Smith and Machine Gun Kelly Were the Best Dressed Guys at the VMAs

Both musicians did cool, unexpected takes on uptown style.

Tonight’s red carpet for the 2020 VMAs was short, but sweet. Stars struck a pose on the “red carpet,” which was largely pre-shot at different locations before airing. Two standout moments from this reimagined carpet were thanks to Jaden Smith and Machine Gun Kelly, who both provided unexpected, fresh takes on uptown style. (Think, what a society lady would wear to lunch in the Upper East Side.)

First up, Smith, who just released his new album CTV3, hit the step and repeat in a fresh take on the boxy daytime blazer (the style is a signature silhouette of Chanel, who usually does them in tweeds). Smiths’s was a color-blocked jacket, worn with jeans and chunky sneakers, which helped make the structured jacket feel more youthful. Then, Machine Gun Kelly wore a head-to-toe pink ensemble by Berluti that incorporated a turtleneck tank and dress pants, a blazer thrown over his shoulder like he’s at an exclusive country club. There were even pearls around his neck! But his pointy creeper dress shoes by Berluti and messy bedhead helped make the fit feel cool and current.

While both Smith and Kelly’s looks were drastically different, they both drove the same message home: uptown style is good, but uptown-meets-downtown style is even better.
