Liverpool vs Burnley in the Premier League will give Jurgen Klopp something to ponder as the debate over left-back cover continues

When Liverpool face Burnley at Anfield in the Premier League, few of Sean Dyche’s players currently stand out as obvious individual talents who are tipped to be on the move to a top club.

Dyche’s team relies on the collective being stronger than the sum of the individuals, though there is one man who has received a significant amount of praise over his teammates this season: left-winger Dwight McNeil.

Still only 20, McNeil has been impressing at Turf Moor this season, with much speculation linking him with moves to clubs in the top-six.

Speaking on the Blood Red Behind Enemy Lines podcast, sports broadcaster and Burnley fan Jonny Bentley said: « He is so good – he is poetry in motion to watch and when he is on the ball, he is excellent.

« He gave Trent Alexander-Arnold a really tough time in the fixture last season – supposedly the best right-back in the league – and he was absolutely not phased at all.

« He was running at him, dribbling, and getting around him and putting crosses into the box. His composure on the ball is remarkable for a person of his age and he also very humble – he has immense potential.

« Certainly, he is the danger for Liverpool to think about going forward. He is one of the best passers in the team and his vision is excellent. »

Liverpool are not thought to be currently interested in McNeil – though a number of teams including Everton, Leicester City and Wolves have been linked – but if he were to develop further, that could change.

He might also be capable of playing in a position that Liverpool are seeking back-up in – though Neco Williams’ emergence has tempered that slightly.

Bentley added: « He might be a left-back in the future – he is very, very left-footed and he excels when he is delivering balls into the box, on a similar pathway to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

« He is, for me, Burnley’s best player overall, maybe with James Tarkowski. But certainly, for ceiling, he is higher than any of the Burnley players and will go on to achieve big things.

« He’s also been linked with Manchester City and to be honest, you watch his game and think actually, what could Pep Guardiola do with that?

« He has got the technical brilliance to succeed at a club like City but the problem is he may only be starting one in five or six matches. »

Certainly for Liverpool’s clash with Burnley at Anfield, the only priority for the Reds will be keeping McNeil – but longer term, they might just keep an eye on his progress.
