The northern Virginia right-hander pitched for the Rays under new pitching coach for the nationals…

WASHINGTON – Shawn Camp, a major league veteran from Fairfax, was preparing for his second season with Tampa Bay when the team hired a new pitching coach

It was before the 2007 season and Tampa Bay landed Jim Hickey to watch over a young pitching staff, having had veterans such as Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte with the Houston Astros.

« Obviously this was his first year with the organization, » Camp, 44, told Federal Baseball on Monday, hours after Hickey was named the new pitching coach for the national championships.

« Anytime you get the chance to work with Joe Maddon (that’s a plus)… Jim was a positive guy He’s very practical with his approach »

« He made it easy for people (Coaches) all have to gain experience, right? We didn’t have the best staff that year, so it was tough for him, » Camp added, a resident of Haymarket, Va., and the pitching coach at George Mason University, his alma mater

But he found success with the team in the years that followed, then joined Maddon with the Cubs for the 2018 season Hickey has spent the last two seasons in player development with the Dodgers

« Just a positive guy, an upbeat guy, one of the boys at the clubhouse, » Camp said of Hickey

The Nationals’ new mentor – who replaces the late Paul Menhart – noted on a Monday call with reporters that sometimes you treat Max Scherzer differently from Austin Voth

Hickey will also face a field that has struggled over the past two regular seasons

Virginia native and ODU product Daniel Hudson is expected to return, but University of Virginia product Sean Doolittle could sign elsewhere as a free agent The Nationals also have an improving Tanner Rainey, the veteran Will Harris and Wander Suero hot or cold

“You obviously get a lot of help from your bullpen coach A lot of relievers will rely on the reliever box coach,” said Camp “I think the most important thing for Jim and guys who have been successful in launching coaches in the major leagues is that they have no hierarchy »

« Jim won’t have a problem with the way the Nats run things Mike Rizzo did a great job there – I know him well The fanbase here is going to welcome him He’s going to fit in well This is how Davey runs his clubhouse «

« These Tampa Bay boys are staying together I’m waiting to hear Tom Foley come over, » Camp said of the former Rays coach from 2002 to 17

Camp said Hickey and Martinez got along well with a staff in Tampa Bay which sometimes included Don Zimmer, Foley and George Hendricks

“You could have put the (coaches) locker room inside the (players) locker room; open door policy, « Camp said of his days in Tampa Bay » Davey Martinez has no enemies in the game Ultimately, it’s the manager’s team «

Camp featured at Robinson High and George Mason University The right-hander was a tireless arm in the majors and led the league in 2012 with 80 appearances with the Cubs He ended his career with the Phillies two years more late and played 541 games in his career – just like a reliever

The camp kept in touch with Washington manager Martinez, who was on the coaching staff with Hickey in Tampa Bay. The camp texted Martinez on Monday and said it was « great to see »Hickey join Washington
