Oregon State’s Spencer Tibbits advanced in match play at the U.S. Amateur after the Beavers’ senior scored a 2 and 1 win over Michael Brennan in the round of 64 Wednesday at Bandon Dunes.
Tibbits, qualifying for match play for the second time of his career, won the first three holes against the Wake Forest incoming freshman and never trailed.
It is the first time Tibbits has won a match at the U.S. Amateur. Last year, Tibbits qualified for match play but lost in the opening round at Pinehurst in North Carolina.
Tibbits was in control for the entire match after winning the first three holes, two with birdies. Another birdie at the par-4 seventh increased Tibbits lead to 4-up.
From there, Tibbits kept it steady, making eight pars and a birdie over the next 10 holes to close out Brennan on the 17th hole.
Next up for Tibbits is a round of 32 match at 7:10 a.m. Thursday against Stewart Hagestad of Newport Beach, Calif. The 29-year-old Hagestad is one of the most accomplished players in the field. Hagestad is the 2016 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, and has played in three U.S. Opens and one Masters.
Thursday is a double round, as those winning round of 32 matches advance to the afternoon round of 16.
