Real Salt Lake Falls to Monterrey in Leagues Cup Match
Real Salt Lake sought redemption in their Leagues Cup match against Monterrey, but the Mexican team had other plans. Monterrey quickly took a 2-0 lead within the first 13 minutes, dampening RSL’s spirits. One of the goals was an own goal from Justen Glad, further demoralizing the home team. Despite outpossessing and outshooting Monterrey throughout the match, RSL couldn’t find the back of the net. RSL had 15 total shots and five « big chances » compared to Monterrey’s eight shots and three « big chances. » Head coach Pablo Mastroeni acknowledged the missed opportunities, stating, « I thought we created some really good opportunities… but tonight, they (Monterrey) were killers in front of goal. »
Defensive Struggles and Monterrey’s Dominance
The match highlighted RSL’s defensive weaknesses, as they conceded three goals that Mastroeni believes the team should have handled. Argentine striker German Berterame scored the second and third goals for Monterrey, but it was Glad’s own goal that proved to be the most crucial. Mastroeni praised Monterrey’s decision-making speed and technical ability, emphasizing that RSL had not faced such a level of skill in MLS. When asked about the chances of either league winning the tournament, Mastroeni stated that both MLS and Liga MX are closely matched and have a shot at winning it all.
RSL’s Path to Advancement
Despite the disappointing loss, RSL still has a chance to advance from their group due to their 3-0 victory over last-place Seattle. The Sounders would need to win by three goals against Monterrey to pose a threat to RSL’s advancement. The crucial match between the Sounders and Monterrey will take place on Sunday, July 30 in Seattle.
