The New Mutants director Josh Boone is getting to release his own cut of the film after studio executives changed their mind about lightening the tone in the edit room, which is just one of the many bumps in the road the movie has had since it was filmed years ago.
But that doesn’t mean that the director hasn’t left some scenes on the cutting room floor. Opening up to ComicBook.com, Boone spoke about the kind of moments he decided to remove.
Boone described the moments as « a cool selection of deleted scenes that were either too funny or not tonally right for the cut, which I’ve left as fun things for fans to look at and enjoy that are a little more wink-y, gag stuff ».
Previously, the director stated that some of those scenes would have made reference to Deadpool and other X-Men, and while some references remain, they aren’t in the same vein.
He also teased some things he has recorded to be bonus features for the home releases, stating that: « Instead of the typical scene-specific audio commentary, I did sort of a career retrospective interview with [artist] Bill Sienkiewicz to talk about his time working for Marvel and DC and all the other work he’s done over the years. »
Sienkiewicz’s comics credits not only include New Mutants, but also Elektra: Assassin and Moon Knight, among others.
Speaking of home releases, you may wonder why Disney aren’t just releasing this movie to their streaming service first, when they are even doing with the live-action Mulan remake, one of their tentpole releases that, being realistic, is a much bigger deal. There’s a reason for that.
The New Mutants is out today (August 28) in the US and will be released on September 4 in the UK.
