Detroit Tigers rookie starter Casey Mize pitched five innings without allowing a hit on Friday night before giving up a double to Chicago White Sox third baseman Yolmer Sanchez with nobody out in the sixth.

Before giving up the hit to Sanchez, Mize had been perfect except for a lead-off walk to Edwin Encarnacion in the second inning and then another lead-off walk to Nomar Mazara in the sixth.

One batter later, manager Ron Gardenhire opted to go to the bullpen. Mize had thrown 76 pitches over 5 1/3 innings.

Things went downhill rapidly from there. Tigers reliever Jose Cisnero hit Tim Anderson with a pitch and then gave up a 3-run home run to Eloy Jimenez. The White Sox retook the lead that the Tigers had gained just moments earlier.

A standout at Auburn University, Mize was selected by the Tigers with the No. 1 overall pick in 2018. After opening the season at the team’s alternate site in Toledo, he was called up to Detroit last month along with fellow rookie Tarik Skubal.

Mize, 23, was making his fifth start of the season. He made his debut in Chicago on Aug. 19, striking out seven batters in 4 1/3 inning in what was his longest outing of the year until Friday.

Mize was matched Friday by White Sox starter Lucas Giolito, who threw five shutout innings before he also ran into trouble in the sixth. The Tigers scored three runs in a lengthy top of the sixth inning, which may have knocked Mize out of his rhythm.

Matthew Boyd was the most recent Tiger to flirt with a no-hitter. He lost his bid with two outs in the ninth inning on Sept. 17, 2017 against the White Sox at Comerica Park.

Justin Verlander was the last Tigers’ pitcher to throw a no-hitter. He did it on May 7, 2011, in Rogers Centre in Toronto against the Blue Jays.
