Ty Gibbs Wins ARCA Race at Gateway for Second Straight Year

Ty Gibbs called his victory in the 2020 Dutch Boy 150 at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway amazing. He absolutely dominated the ARCA Menards Series race in Madison, IL on Saturday (Aug. 29). It was his sixth career ARCA win and fourth win of this season.

Gibbs sat atop the leaderboard in the lone practice session and started the race in fifth place as the starting lineup was set via the owners’ point standings.

“I can’t thank all my guys for making these things fast,” Gibbs told MAVTV after winning the race. “We came home at Gateway with two [wins] in a row. It’s always nice to be back in victory lane. This is the first track I’ve been to where I’ve won with fans, thank you fans!”

Gibbs led 109 of the 120 laps in the race and fended off the competition on a late-race restart.

Chandler Smith finished second, and according to the TV broadcasters, he unofficially became the points leader in the ARCA Menards Series Sioux Chief Showdown standings.

“My Venturini [Motorsports] team did a great job with what we’re up against. I’m really proud of them,” Smith said. “We recovered from practice where we didn’t practice good at all.”

“We came back with what we had last year and we were really good even though an axle fell out,” he continued. “For what we had, it was a pretty good race for us. We need to make these small gains, aero-gains, overall grip gains, downforce, sideforce, all that different stuff. Not many fans take into account what goes into building these. I’m proud of Billy [Venturini, his crew chief]. I’m happy to be here and go truck racing tomorrow.”

Smith will compete in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race at Gateway tomorrow. Driving the No. 51 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota, he will start in 12th place.

Sam Mayer finished in third place. He too will compete in the Truck Series race, starting in 15th place.

Max McLaughlin finished in fourth place. Truck Series driver and fellow Hattori Racing Enterprises driver Austin Hill served as McLaughlin’s spotter.

On lap 103, ARCA points leader Michael Self spun and sustained significant damage to his No. 25 Venturini Motorsports Toyota.

With 10 laps to go, fellow full-time driver and rookie contender Hailie Deegan spun her No. 4 DGR-Crosley Ford. She finished in ninth place.

The other two full-time drivers, Bret Holmes and Drew Dollar, finished in sixth and seventh place, respectively.

Self leads the point standings over Holmes by seven points, a closer battle after the 13th race of the season.
