UK town experiences second earthquake in a week as homes left shaking again

A town in Bedfordshire was hit by its second earthquake in a week, experts have said.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) has received reports from the public in Leighton Buzzard, in Bedfordshire, saying they felt an earthquake late on Sunday night.

It is the second time a tremor has been felt in the area, after a magnitude 3.5 quake was felt on September 8.

The BGS tweeted: « There have been a small number of reports received from members of the public indicating they felt this earthquake, which is in the same area as the 8 September 3.5 quake. One report describes ‘It felt slower and less intense than the previous tremor’. »

Rich Wilkinson-Iles posted on Twitter :  » What is going on??? Just woken by another earth quake in Leighton Buzzard! »

And Ian Davison wrote: « Another #earthquake in Leighton Buzzard just now. What on Earth is going on? Is there fracking going on in secret somewhere? »

It comes just days after the area was affected by a 3.5 magnitude quake.

According to the British Geological Survey (BGS) quake maps, the epicentre was in 3km northwest of Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, and recorded at a depth of 10km.

A BGS spokesman said: « The most recent event was over 100 times smaller than the event on the 8 September in the same area.

« The small event that occurred in Bedfordshire last night could have occurred because all the stress in the rocks was not relieved by the event on September 8 in the same area or it caused a slight change the stress regime in that location.

People reported feeling the 3.3 magnitude tremor strike at 9.45am in parts of London on Tuesday morning.

Leighton Buzzard resident Stephen Bennett told Mirror Online: « It was odd. It felt like a double impact. Like something had hit our house.

« There was a double thud and the house rattled, it was over in less than a second. »

The BGS said one report from a resident who felt the shaking suggested the earthquake was like a « large explosion ».
