Police, the fire service and the coastguard helicopter are searching for the girl who was reported missing in the River Leven, Balloch at around 6.45pm
Emergency services are at the River Leven in Balloch, Scotland this evening after the girl, thought to be aged eight, was reported missing in the water.
They were called at 6.45pm initially to reports of two missing people, but have since confirmed one has been found safe.
BBC Scotland journalist Linda Sinclair tweeted: « A major search operation is underway to find an 8 year old girl who has entered the River Leven, at Balloch, West Dunbartonshire. Police, Coastguard Helicopter and the Fire Service are at the scene. »
One mum wrote: « Everyone’s nightmare. My boys are always on rivers but I keep them away from flowing areas entirely. »
They tweeted: « Motorists are advised that Balloch Road is currently closed between the A82 roundabout and Carrochan Road, Balloch due to an ongoing police incident at the River Leven. Please use an alternative route. »
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 6.46pm on Sunday, August 9 to reports of a person in the water in Balloch.
“Operations Control mobilised two appliances and two water rescue units to the scene at Balloch Bridge.
