1895: America’s first car race, organized by the Chicago Times-Herald – Chicago to Evanston and back; 6 cars, 55 miles, Frank Duryea wins an average of seven mph.

1975: The great Michael Holding made his debut in the first test of the series between Australia and the West Indies in Brisbane. He won’t remember that too fondly, however: he took 0 for 127 in the match when West Indies were beaten by eight wickets in a series they would eventually lose 1-5.

1979: England defeated the West Indies by two races in one day in Sydney. This game led to the introduction of field restrictions for one-day international matches. It took three West Indies to win the final ball, Mike Brearley positioned all of his fielders, including the wicketkeeper, on the border, and the West Indians and the SCG patrons were outraged. It was within the rules … but not much longer.

2004: Record with the fewest points for both teams in 1st. Half of 55 in a game between the Nets and Trail Blazers.

2009: Another memorable debut in the West Indies. Nineteen-year-old Adrian Barath made a hundred in his first test in the gabba. Barath was picked for height by Brian Lara at the age of 11 and he did not disappoint – his century of second innings followed by West Indies came in with 132 balls. However, the West Indies lost the Test by one inning.
