Aron Canet has some lucky stars to thank for avoiding a disaster in this surprising near miss during this Moto2 qualifying at Portimao
It is a fact of racing that accidents can and do happen, but what is even truer for motorcycle racing is that the original crash itself is only part of the potential problem.
This was no better demonstrated by Moto2 rider Aron Canet, who no doubt looked up at the sky in thanks after miraculously getting away with a potentially bigger accident that we didn’t want to imagine falling during Moto2 Qualification in Portimao.
The original incident itself was harmless enough, Canet lost his machine from Turn 8, enough to run him and his bike over the forehead of Portimao’s famous crest – which, at the MotoGP level, mimics a Cadwell Park jump – and after Drag down the other side.
The forehead of the hill, however, means you are out of sight for the pack behind it, and in Canet’s case they came close and fast without knowing where the Spaniard was met along the way.
Luckily, Canet – with adrenaline undoubtedly flowing through his body and dilated pupils – managed to play dodgeball with the incoming bikes before crawling to the side of the track. Let’s just say your heart will be in your mouth when you see this . . .
In competition with his team-mate from Aspar SpeedUp, Canet moved up to Moto2 this season and will end his campaign as the best-placed rookie in the overall standings.
