Weltnachrichten – GB – GUNTER: Did Trudeau’s first wave leave the closet empty for the second?

. .

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s daily descent from the stairs in front of Rideau Cottage to tell us how he’s dealing with the pandemic.

And he’s made some television appearances to let us know, as chairman of a minority government without parliamentary approval, that he’s going to completely reshape Canadian society in terms of income, welfare, taxes, the environment, gender equality and global relationships – the so-called Great reset.

During the second wave, however, there weren’t any Trudeau daily Oprah imitations: « You get a billion! And you get a billion! Everyone gets a billion !!! »

Even so, I can’t see the Prime Minister suddenly losing his taste for the limelight or finding a new respect for the Constitution that clearly gives the provinces – not Ottawa – a priority on public health issues.

No, as more provinces reintroduce restrictions on public movement, Justin Trudeau has been quieter because his government, I believe, blew its bundle during the first wave.

From the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) – the League of Developed Countries – we know that the Liberal government of Canada has spent more per capita than any other Western government helping individuals and businesses out of the pandemic are affected.

Heck, they gave their flagship handout – CERB – to nearly 900. 000 Canadians who did not qualify. And if you think they’ll spend the time and political capital to get that money back, you’re kidding yourself.

The U. . K. . The 67 million-strong government has spent the equivalent of $ 174 billion on COVID relief. Canada of 38 million people has spent over $ 300.

Together, our federal and provincial governments now spend a larger share of the country’s GDP (58%) than Sweden or Norway or Germany or France.

What is more worrying is that Canada is in debt more than any other developed country to fund its COVID spending addiction.

This year, Ottawa will raise an amount equal to 20% of GDP to fund all of its expenses (COVID and others). . The average in the left European zone will be half as high.

To top it off, it took the Liberals longer than any government in Canadian history between their last election and their first budget – over 13 months and counting.

Your Nov. . 30 economic update announced this week is just a snapshot, not a full budget.

The Parliamentary Budget Commissioner (PBO) reprimanded the Trudeau government earlier this month for not knowing (or at least not revealing) how much money it was spending where.

Yves Giroux, the PBO, said that without accurate, current public accounts, it becomes impossible for the opposition or anyone else to hold the government accountable.

I think we don’t hear that much from Trudeau anymore because he’s like an NHL general manager with a team of mediocre players who have made so many bad moves that he’s now running out of space.

Trudeau cannot afford to take any further steps as he exhausted the treasury in the first round.

To the extent that the Liberals cannot spend now to ease the economic pain of the second lockdown, they may be indirectly helping to finance the spread of the pandemic.
