Five children have tested positive for coronavirus at one Liverpool school as the number of cases across the city continue to rise.

Liverpool Council confirmed that five pupils at Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School in West Derby had tested positive for the virus, with a further 220 pupils now isolating at home.

It comes as another school, LIPA Primary School in the city centre, asked three members of staff and 27 pupils to isolate after it recorded one positive case.

The two schools affected today come on top of six affected yesterday and five last week, meaning a growing proportion of the city’s schools now have at least one year group isolating at home.

City leaders continue to warn of the threat of lockdown measures being reimposed on Liverpool as covid-19 cases continue to surge.

The situation is being compounded by an apparent lack of testing capacity in the city and across the country, causing delays in getting tests.

Mayor Joe Anderson and public health director Matt Ashton have continued to warn residents to follow measures to contain the spread of the virus and Mr Ashton wrote to all headteachers today informing them that all parents should be told to wear masks when picking up or dropping off kids at school.

In his letter, he wrote: « It is now essential that parents and carers in Liverpool wear face coverings when collecting and dropping off their children at school.

« All school staff should role model best practice by also wearing a face covering if supervising during collection or drop off.

« Those who refuse or cannot wear face coverings should maintain social distancing of at least 2m from children and other parents/ carers.

« We thank you in advance for ensuring greater levels of safety in your school and our communities. »
