A fake Zoom invite resulted in the demise of a successful Sydney-based hedge fund and cost nearly $ 8. 7 million after a hacker was able to send fake invoices on behalf of the company.

On Monday, AFR reported that Levitas Capital was forced to close after its main client, the Australian Catholic Super, withdrew funds following the September cyber attack.

The hedge fund’s cyber investigators have discovered a fake Zoom invitation opened by one of the fund’s co-founders, Michael Fagan or Michael Brookes.

This enabled the hacker to install malicious software that allowed them to access the fund’s email system, which they used to send fake invoices.

As it turns out, the people behind the attack had sent a series of bills to the fund trustees and administrators – AKA, the people who hold or control the money invested by the fund – to do so bring money to send to places where they shouldn’t.

Then a Pakistani citizen, Muhammad Bhatti, made 64 (!) withdrawals from a bank where the money was transferred, as well as a little shopping spree before leaving Australia.

All in all, almost 800. $ 000 from the $ 8. 7 million counterfeit bills were issued by Mr. Bhatti. The rest were caught before the money was cleared, luckily for the fund.
