Today we announce that M George Mina began his appointment as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Australia to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva

The WTO is a global forum where its 164 members negotiate trade rules and agreements and resolve trade disputes when they arise

Australia continues to play a leading role in the WTO, including as chair of negotiations to develop the first set of global digital trade rules, pushing for reform of human rights. agricultural subsidies and through active negotiations on fisheries subsidies and rules to reduce barriers to the supply of services

M Mina is a career senior official at DFAT, including as First Deputy Secretary, Trade Negotiations Office, Australian Campaign Leader for the United Nations Human Rights Council and most recently First Deputy Secretary, Division consular services and crisis management

He has also served abroad as Deputy Chef de Mission in Paris, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Australia to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Australian Permanent Mission to the WTO

We thank Ambassador Frances Lisson PSM, who recently completed her three-year term, for her outstanding contribution to advancing Australia’s interests in the WTO, in particular for her leadership in launching the negotiations on e-commerce

M Mina will join Minister Birmingham tonight in a virtual meeting of WTO ministers, to lead negotiations on global rules on fisheries subsidies and discuss the role of the WTO in contributing to economic recovery global COVID-19
