Jaume Masia won an exciting Moto3 Aragon Grand Prix from 17th place on the grid for Leopard Honda as Albert Arenas d’Aspar extended his championship lead despite finishing seventh

Masia’s last victory came last year in Argentina well over a year ago and he moved from the sixth row to Aragon to claim the victory by just 0091 seconds, becoming the 100th winner of the Grand Honda prices in all classes

Championship leader Arenas took third place on the grid ahead of Raul Fernandez d’Ajo KTM

Fernandez dove past Arenas on the inside of the left turn of Turn 4, while Tatsuki Suzuki on the Honda SIC58 downgraded Arenas to third place later in the lap

The top five groups of Fernandez, Suzuki, Arenas, Romano Fenati on Max Racing Husqvarna and Darryn Binder of CIP quickly escaped the pursuit of Leopard Honda de Masia

Fernandez kept the lead until the seventh lap, when Binder passed the penultimate corner, while the group led by Masia began to close the 22 second gap to the leaders

Petronas Sprinta’s John McPhee was forced to serve a long penalty lap on lap three for irresponsible driving in qualifying which took him out of the points in 17th place

But the Scotsman quickly rallied and made his way quickly into the top 10, before taking the lead of the second group ahead of Masia on the eighth lap

On lap 11, the leading group swelled to eight as McPhee, Masia and Gresini’s Jeremy Alcoba clung to the back

Fernandez regained his lead in lap eight, with Binder coming back on lap 14, opening the door for Arenas, Masia and Fenati to demote the KTM Ajo to fifth place

But Fernandez regained third place over Fenati and Masia with a daring double raid in Turns 4 and 5 on lap 15, while Arenas hit the front at Turn 12

Fernandez assured that he would be short lived and returned to the lead at the start of the 16th lap

Masia was propelled by Fernandez on the run along the straight back in the long 16/17 double left turn, but the KTM Ajo quickly fought back on the brakes in turn 1

Once again Masia used the power of his Honda to blast Fernandez around Turn 16 to lead the field on the final lap

Masia resisted all of the pressure on him, narrowly avoiding a penalty for going over the track limits in the race at Turn 12 to give his title hopes a little boost as he move within 36 Arenas points

Binder finished second in the last lap for his second podium of the year, Fernandez retaining third place for his first Moto3 podium

Fenati finished fourth ahead of McPhee – who ran wide at Turn 1 late – with Alcoba demoting Arenas to seventh right on Suzuki death, Celestino Vietti (VR46) and Leopard’s Dennis Foggia rounding out the top 10

With Ai Ogura, his closest title rival, only 14th on Team Asia Honda, Arenas now leads the championship by 13 points, with Vietti 18 adrift

Despite being absent due to COVID-19 protocols, after sitting next to someone who tested positive on a plane this week, Snipers Honda’s Tony Arbolino lost just nine points to Arenas and is now 29 adrift

Gabriel Rodrigo de Gresini was taken to the medical center after a severe fall from the heights in the first round
