Detectives treat the death of a woman in her thirties whose body was found in the middle of a suburban street in Darwin as murder.

Police were made aware of a stinging incident on Freshwater Road next to Jingili Water Gardens at around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

« There was an incident in which a woman suffered multiple stab wounds, » said Detective Superintendent Mark Malogorksi.

When a crime scene was set up, officers and the police dog unit began searching the nearby streets for the alleged perpetrator.

About an hour later, a 34-year-old man was arrested next to a bus stop on Jingili Terrace.

He was dressed in a white court suit before being driven away in an unmarked police vehicle.

« That would be in line with our forensic procedures to ensure we got full evidence on the matter, » said Detective Superintendent Malogorski.

He said the crime scene, which is next to a popular playground in Jingili, could stay in place until late at night.

« Every murder investigation victim is a tragedy for the entire Northern Territory community, » said Detective Superintendent Malogorski.

Resident Cassie Anthon said she saw police set up the scene shortly after the incident.
