David’ Bumble ‘Lloyd backed Jonny Bairstow for a surprise return to the England test team at the expense of current workers Rory Burns and Dom Sibley
Bairstow made the last of his 70 test appearances in December 2019 and was left out of last summer’s series against West Indies and Pakistan
The 31-year-old was not given a test contract in England last month, but « Bumble » says he would be his « choice » to open alongside Zak Crawley in the Ashes series of the next year in Australia
Beating third, Kent Crawley’s batsman had a brilliant double century against Pakistan in August and was tipped to move up to number one
Current forerunners Burns and Sibley have both endured mixed Test careers to date and former England coach Lloyd questioned their place in the squad
« If I was a selector I would always watch the ashes It’s on my mind every four years To prepare well and prepare well, » he wrote in a column for Sky Sports. p>
« England seem to have settled on Rory Burns and Dom Sibley but they haven’t set the game on fire
« A first pair must be consistent and able to shift gears to move the game forward
“For this reason, I would definitely start with Zak Crawley, who looks so natural, and Jonny Bairstow, who is a very accomplished cricketer
« Burns and Sibley both have weird techniques and I doubt they played like this when they were 16 or 18 There just seems to be so much that can go wrong
Last time in the ashes, selectors had the idea that one-day opener Jason Roy could open in a test cricket match. It was a spectacular failure
« Now the other one-day cricket opener is Bairstow, he has six hundred test matches
“He would be my choice; he’s pretty basic at what he does but he can be a game-changer, there’s no doubt «
Lloyd also says it would be a « tragedy » if World Cup winner Adil Rashid did not take part in another test
The 32-year-old has made 19 test appearances but none since the summer of 2019, with his immediate focus on white ball cricket
« I would camp outside Adil Rashid’s house, talk to his family daily and if he had any doubts about his shoulder, give him the best medical treatment in the world and get him on the team, » Lloyd added
« He plays bowling beautifully, now he’s the right age, in his early 30s, for a leg spinner and I think it would be a tragedy and a travesty if we lost him
‘He’s obviously got a bit of self-doubt and needs a little TLC so I would give him that, make him want and do whatever makes him feel comfortable because he would benefit from this team, no doubt about it «
