. .
Almost three months before the day Paris Saint-Germain played their first Champions League final, Thomas Tuchel, the man who led them to this momentous opportunity, is on trial.
The former coach of Borussia Dortmund has eight days to prove himself on the club’s board. That simply means scoring at least four points in clashes against RB Leipzig and Manchester United.
If they don’t, PSG will likely be promoted to the Europa League after Christmas. At this point it would be a miracle if Tuchel were still in command.
After the club reached its European peak in August, it would be a dramatic low. The first time in the QSI era that the last 16 failed to qualify.
The Parisians lead Ligue 1 with 24 points, but a traffic jam of teams is in the immediate vicinity. If Marseille win the two games in hand, they will match Parc des Princes, who have lost more caps this season than Lille, Lyon and Lens, to name a few.
On Friday they led 2-0 in Monaco, but broke down embarrassingly in the second half and lost 3-2. Their inability to react to the game they were slipping reflected the way they lost control in the Champions League earlier this month in Leipzig and was arguably even more worrying than the outcome of the game.
But it is not necessarily her domestic form that causes consternation. On the continent, PSG are suffering in a group that has been classified as relatively cheap.
You have completed three lackluster accomplishments that earned three points. Defeats to Manchester United and Leipzig have brought them to the brink.
It is true that injuries and illness helped test them. It is also true that the squad that was left to Tuchel has gaping holes that were undetectable a year ago. But it is also true that they underperformed to a serious level.
Concern that PSG was suffering from the clash was highlighted by the coach’s very public stance on Neymar’s lack of fitness. It is clear the Brazilian is not prepared for an encounter like this, but so desperate is the hour he needs.
« We need him. It is absolutely necessary that he play, ”he told the press. “He has the confidence, the quality and the experience. He is a key player for his team.
« He’s not in the best of physical shape, but he’ll start tomorrow. He can handle this type of match physically and mentally.
« I hope it’s not too much for him and that we will help him. We have to work for him. He is not alone. ”
PSG is never the hardest-working character in a defensive sense. He is ready and willing to step back to give the 28-year-old the luxury of focusing on his offensive game.
The fact that Neymar is “necessary” for PSG doesn’t just reflect his individual quality. It sheds light on both PSG’s failed summer transfer window and the one-dimensional nature of their side, relying on both former Barcelona striker and superstar buddy Kylian Mbappe in attack.
In fact, the club’s Champions League battles can be traced directly back to this couple who haven’t found the net once in competition this season.
« If Kylian and Ney don’t score it will have a big impact on us as they are crucial players, » the coach admitted. “We need goals from them and great performances. ”
Unfortunately, PSG is not at full capacity prior to the crash. Furthermore, there are still concerns about midfielders Marco Verratti and Ander Herrera, as well as striker Mauro Icardi, who has barely played this year.
Juan Bernat and Thilo Kehrer injured in defense and Presnel Kimpembe and Idrissa Gueye banned and this is a full-blown selection crisis.
During the Final 8 in Lisbon, PSG were able to come together as a team to overcome such difficulties.
On Tuesday the focus will again be on the superstar pairing. Tuchel and PSG put their reputation on them.
« You won’t reach a Champions League final if you click your fingers, » said Marquinhos on the eve of the clash.
In the same way, appearances like PSG have not yet come to be a showpiece. After the pathetic appearance in Germany earlier this month, the coach said he was not afraid for his job.
With a troubled relationship with sporting director Leonardo, anything but victory could be the beginning of the end.
