The Warriors will be figuring out in the « next few weeks » if they have to move to Australia again to keep the NRL season alive.

When announcing the 2021 draw, General Manager Andrew Abdo considered that the NRL would consider moving the New Zealand team for pre-season training as the border between the two countries remains closed.

« We’re in pretty advanced discussions about whether we can possibly call to see if the Warriors are moving to Australia in the preseason, » Abdo said. « I would expect NRL and Warriors to be on a call together in the next few weeks. «

According to the current schedule, the Warriors will open their campaign at home and host the Titans on Aug.. March at Mt Smart Stadium.

« If it’s not the first round, the Warriors will have a home game in New Zealand at some point during the season, » Abdo said. « What an opportunity for the Warriors to get recognition for their fans for what they sacrificed in 2020, how they played and how they came together. «

The 2021 season kicks off with a battle between the game’s two master coaches after the full draw was released on Thursday.

The season will return to 25 rounds after last year’s shortened 20-round season. March start. The Origin series will also return to the midseason. The venues have yet to be confirmed.

« The draw is complex, we can’t get every fan and club what they want, but what we’ve tried this year is balanced, » said NRL boss Andrew Abdo.

If the borders between New Zealand and Australia are still closed, they will have to move again to the Central Coast.

« We are confident that the borders will be open, but if not, the warriors will be ready for it, » Abdo said.

The 2021 season will be back to normal for players regarding COVID-19 biosecurity protocols, but will change if there is a sudden outbreak.

« As this situation changes, we will put together a series of protocols that are relevant to the level of risk, » Abdo said. « If we are forced to do this in 2021, it will be much more sustainable than 2020. «

The NRL has made a conscious effort to reduce the number of triple-away routes in this year’s draw from eight to four. In the 2021 season, fewer turnarounds will be reduced from 26 to 25 for five days.

More local derbies will also be played on family-friendly weekends and bank holidays as the Magic Round, Anzac Round and Easter Weekend Games return in 2021.

The Broncos will play their first Kevin Walters-era game against the Eels on Friday at Suncorp Stadium. In round three there will be a major rematch between the Panthers and Storm.
