Residents in Melbourne’s western suburbs were told to leave their homes on Monday night as a grass fire closed in a large housing estate.
The CFA issued an emergency alert at 6 a.m. to those living in Mount Cottrell, Truganina, and Chartwell. 8 p.m., 14 miles west of Melbourne’s business district. A fire nearby got out of control.
Locals at Rockbank, Tarneit, and Ravenhall were told to monitor conditions in case circumstances should change even though they were not threatened by the fire.
VicEmergency said homes near Middle Road and the Chartwell Estate « could be affected anytime within the next hour ». .
The grass fire was moving south from Troups Round South towards the Chartwell Estate on Boundary Road.
« Firefighters were unable to stop the fire and it is moving towards the Chartwell Estate, » VicEmergency said in an online update.
« Leaving now is the safest option before conditions get too dangerous. . . Emergency services may not be able to help you if you decide to stay.
The fire was only 200 to 300 meters long at 5. 3 p.m., but has probably grown « significantly » since then, according to a CFA spokesperson.
Residents near the fire protection zone have been asked to bring their pets, medication, cell phone, and charger with them when moving to a safe area with family or friends.
When people could not leave their homes, the CFA recommended closing all exterior doors, windows, and vents, turning off cooling systems, and sheltering in a room with multiple exits and views so that outside conditions can be monitored.
« If your home catches fire and conditions inside become unbearable, you need to get out and go to an area that has already been burned, » VicEmergency said Monday night.
