VIRGINIA WATER, England – After nearly nine months in America, English golfer Tyrrell Hatton is on course for a happy homecoming in the BMW PGA Championship – the tournament that inspired him to turn pro

Hatton will take a three-stroke lead over Dane JB Hansen and Frenchman Victor Perez in the final round at Wentworth, with British Open champion Shane Lowry, Tommy Fleetwood, Patrick Reed and David Horsey another comeback on Saturday

Hatton grew up not far from Wentworth and often came to one of the European Tour’s flagship events as a spectator, as he entered the final round in 2016, a shot out of the head before to finish seventh

« I hope my goal was to win this tournament so it would be very special, » Hatton said after going 69 under par in the third round to drop 14 under the overall standings

« I just have to try not to get too far ahead of myself, gain confidence that I won on the Tour, go out there and control myself, play well like I have done the last three days and see what happens «

Hatton started the day with a shot out of the head and fell further behind with a bogey on the third, but bounced back to birdie the next day and jumped in the lead with a 20ft eagle on the 12th

He also birdied on the 13th and recovered from a bogey on the 15th with a closing birdie to put himself in pole position for a fifth European Tour title and the second win of the season after the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March

Fleetwood, who lost to Aaron Rai in the playoffs at the Scottish Open last Sunday, was 4 over par after seven holes on Thursday but stood up in contention with a third round of 67 that included six birdies and a par on the 18 after hitting his second shot in the water surrounding the green

Horsey also posted a 67 thanks to five birdies out of the last nine as he seeks a fifth European Tour title and first since 2015

Lowry shared halfway with Matt Fitzpatrick, but the final group was a combined 6 over par as Lowry carded a 74 and Fitzpatrick struggled with a 76
