Australia to appoint outgoing Finance Minister Mathias Cormann as Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)

Senator Cormann has been finance minister for the past seven years, but announced in July that he would retire this year

The OECD is an international organization working to create policies that promote economic growth and seek to improve social and environmental challenges around the world

Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Thursday announced his government’s intention to nominate the Belgian-born senator to head the OECD when current Secretary-General Angel Gurria resigns

« We think the OECD needs the kind of leadership that we think Australia and an Australian can provide. And so I am announcing our intention to appoint Mathias Cormann, as Secretary General of the OECD » , he said

« Mathias’ seven-year experience as the oldest finance minister, born in Belgium, Franco-German and Flemish to boot, I think he is ideally equipped for this stimulating role »

Senator Cormann said it was « a great honor » to be appointed to one of the most « consistent » governing bodies in the world

« The importance of practical cooperation has never been greater in the face of a pandemic, the challenge of climate change, the needs for education and skills, the promising challenges of the digital economy and the reducing differences in tax policy, « he said

« These are great challenges and I accepted this nomination because I believe that I can make a real difference »

Trade Minister Simon Birmingham will take over the finance portfolio when Senator Cormann retires at the end of October

Senator Birmingham has been in Parliament since 2007 and currently holds the Trade, Tourism and Investments portfolio
