Rafters star Hugh Sheridan has had enough of speculation surrounding his sexuality

In a first-person essay and candid follow-up interview with Stellar magazine, the actor and singer reveals that he has had relationships with both men and women over the years, but would rather not be labeled

Opening up about his struggles to navigate media control over his personal life, the actor – who played Ben Rafter from age 22 on the popular series – said he was encouraged to keep his sexuality a secret

He says he now feels the “responsibility” to speak out in order to help others who are “still discovering themselves”

In a lengthy essay on his experiences, the Adelaide-born star said that throughout his school and teenage years, his peers thought he was gay – a label he felt was « out of place, » because at this point he had never been attracted to the same sex

« After I moved to Sydney to attend NIDA, I finally met a guy who I connected with emotionally, mentally and physically, » explained Sheridan, who had been in love with women before that, in the article

« I was in heaven – I could finally be what people always wanted me to be, so I told everyone In return I was told if I was anything other than straight I would never find a job and had to hide my new love To add to the confusion, the two mentors who told me this were themselves openly gay; they were seriously trying to protect me and indeed had my best interests at heart. It was just reality «

Elsewhere in the essay, the 35-year-old said that while in a relationship with a man when he started working on Packed to the Rafters, he opted for confidentiality to make his « more sacred » relationship He later said that when the relationship ended and he fell in love with a woman again, he felt « too embarrassed » to tell anyone given that many knew that. he had been with a man

He added that for years he had « silently protested » for LGBTQIA equality, but now decided to speak out to send an important message

« I realized that if I never broached these issues, if I kept a silent protest, then people would always think that I had something to hide or that I denied that expression to others, » writes- he

« In many ways I wish I didn’t have to write this, but I feel responsible to others who might follow me. By sharing my story now and becoming more transparent, maybe I can help give other private people a break We could live and let them live as they wish

Speaking to Stellar in response to the personal trial, the actor – who tested positive for coronavirus in September – said the lockdown had « given him time to think » about his discomfort surrounding the way that he had been tagged with in the public arena

« It occurred to me that no one ever stands up for people who don’t choose a label, » he said of his decision to open after so many years

He explained, « People will read this and say, ‘He doesn’t go out He’s bisexual He’s asexual Or nonbinary Or queer Or fluid’… Maybe that’s also my way of letting people know that I am still single, and that everyone is on the right track, ”he added with a laugh

Sheridan, who will appear in Back to the Rafters, a reboot of the beloved TV series that will air on Amazon Prime Video next year, has also revealed that he has suffered from depression since he was 16. , feeling « misunderstood » by the people around him
