GYMPIA is in the crosshairs today for severe thunderstorms that could crush the region with destructive winds, large to giant hail and heavy rains leading to flash floods
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, most of Southeast and Central Queensland is in the severe thunderstorm threat zone, but it’s hard to predict which region will do the biggest problem.
– It is difficult to determine where they will develop, â ???? metrologist Rosa Hoff said
Gympie is firmly in the red zone where severe thunderstorms are likely today with a significant area to the west in the area also adding to the region’s risk, Ms Hoff said
â ???? (Severe storms) could move from west to east â ???? they could develop in Kingaroy or Gayndah and move towards Gympie
– They appear very quickly and can change the way they move – they are very dynamicâ ????
Ms. Hoff compared today’s brewing time to a pot of boiling water – ???? you know there will be bubbles, you just don’t know where they will appear and how big they will be, she says
The greatest chance of severe storms is this afternoon, she said, but any time from late morning to tonight is on the cards
She said that in addition to destructive wind gusts of over 100 km / h and heavy rain, the storm could produce large to giant hail with a diameter of 2 cm to over 5 cm ( or from the size of a $ 2 coin up to more than a golf ball)
