World news – AU – Sydney’s heat to give way to possible thunderstorms and damaging winds

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting warm conditions ahead of a front moving through Sydney, bringing a possible severe thunderstorm.

Sydneysiders have enjoyed warm weather on Monday before a possible thunderstorm in the evening, hampering the NSW Rural Fire Service’s preparation for the coming season.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster David Wilke said there would be warm conditions ahead of a front moving through Sydney, bringing a possibly severe thunderstorm and damaging winds.

Sydney was forecast to hit 30 degrees, but the temperature topped 28.4 at Observatory Hill in the city. Temperatures reached 30 in parts of western Sydney including Penrith and Richmond.

Mr Wilke said there was a widespread band of active thunderstorms across the state, which might hit Sydney about 5pm and cooler weather would follow in the coming days.

« I definitely recommend people keeping eye on the radar and warnings as we head into the afternoon, » he said. « It’s certainly not uncommon to have a hot day and then thunderstorms. »

By midday, a severe thunderstorm warning had been issued for the Riverina, Central West Slopes and Upper Western regions, with residents likely to see destructive winds, large hail and heavy rainfall.

Just before 5pm, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Canberra and Queanbeyan, and a severe weather warning for people in the Snowy Mountains and parts of the Illawarra, the South Coast and Southern Tablelands,

« Locally destructive winds are in excess of 120km/h, and are very strong winds, which are capable of doing significant damage. »

Over the weekend, parts of western NSW had significant rainfall, including Broken Hill, which has recorded 36.6 millimetres this month.

The share of NSW declared to be in drought has dropped to 3 per cent compared with 97 per cent in the state in one of the three categories of drought this time a year ago.

However, even with widespread rains in recent months, topped up with big falls over the weekend in the state’s west, almost 60 per cent of NSW remains in one of the three drought categories.

This tally, while improving, helps to demonstrate how large the rainfall deficit has been after years of well-below average rain.

The NSW Rural Fire Service said the weekend’s wet weather and that expected this week would further delay hazard reductions burns, with those around the Sydney and Central Coast region to be postponed by several weeks.

« It’s disappointing. We were in that process of playing catch-up, the fine weather over most of September is the first opportunity since autumn to start doing good and productive hazard reduction work, » RFS spokesman Ben Shepherd said.

The agency had made the most of September’s dry weather to treat 11,000 hectares of land across the state, up 5000 hectares on what it was able to achieve monthly since autumn. However, the RFS is about 30 per cent behind where it would want to be in terms of mitigation efforts.

Mr Shepherd urged people to prepare their homes and evacuation plans ahead of the fire season.

« There are still considerable bits of bush that didn’t burn last year, including the Sydney area … in many areas, it only takes a few days of hot and dry windy weather for there to be an increased risk, » he said.

« We don’t want people to think there will be no fires this summer – there will. That’s why it is essential everyone plays their part. »
