World News – AU – What Australia, India, New Zealand and England must do to qualify for the World Testing Championship final

New Zealand could be a tough contender if they win their four remaining Tests, while England need a series win over India

. .

Last week the ICC finally confirmed the revised methodology to determine the finalists for the first World Test Championship: the two teams with the highest percentage of points earned by those they fought for would have to play for the title.

According to this calculation, Australia is currently at the top of the table with 82. 2% of the total number of points. Her remaining streaks are at home against India (four Tests) and away in South Africa (three).

India, which is second with 75%, will now play four instead of five tests against England. That means India has eight tests left in the current cycle, with each win giving 30 points and a tie 10 points.

Australia obviously has an excellent chance of reaching the final, but New Zealand will also be on the hunt if they score a maximum of 240 points from their two home series against West Indies and Pakistan.

Here are a few scenarios where teams are placed based on their results.

If New Zealand gets the maximum 240 points from its home series, it will score 70% (420 out of 600 points). . However, if they lose points in a test, their percentage drops sharply as both series consist of two tests, with 60 points based on one win. If you win three of the four tests and draw one, your percentage drops to 63. 3.

If India ends with a 4-4 win-loss score on its eight remaining Tests it will be 66. 67% of the total points. When they get a 5-3 rating, their percentage rises to 70. 83, which will be slightly ahead of New Zealand’s maximum score.

Four wins, two draws and two losses will leave India with a score of 69. 44%, slightly less than New Zealand’s percentage for getting 240 at home.

If Australia wins all four Tests against India at home, that number climbs to 86. 67%. If they lose all three Tests to South Africa (if the series takes place) they will fall to 69. 33%.

England is currently in third place at 60. 83%, but since the series against Sri Lanka is unlikely they will have to get a series win against India to qualify. Even if they beat India 2-1, their percentage will only be 60. 33.

The qualifying scenarios will be much clearer in a couple of months if New Zealand had finished their two home series and India had finished their Australian tour.
