Netflix just launched the highly anticipated Notorious B.I.G. Documentary ‘Biggie: I Have a Story to Tell’.
According to the official Netflix YouTube channel that shared the trailer, the Emmett Malloy-directed documentary is the definitive portrait of Christopher Wallace, the man who The Notorious BIG With the unparalleled access that the Wallace Estate provides, this cinematic documentary is an emotional and personal journey through the people, places and events that made one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time. Along with recently unearthed footage from its early days, the rap icon takes a behind-the-scenes documentary to see how it creates classics and brings them to life on stage in incredible, invisible concert clips.
Show candid interviews how the most trusted members of Biggie’s inner circle open up to share stories never before told publicly. According to his mother, the documentary was not presented to highlight or discuss his death, but to celebrate his life. « This will be the first documentary to focus on the experiences of my son’s life rather than the circumstances of his death. It is a celebration of who he was and where he came from. This is how he would have wanted to be remembered. »

Telling the story of a powerful hip-hop figure doesn’t always have to be entertainment (it’s Biggie’s story, after all), so it understandably leans on personal memories of friends and co-workers. But here, too, the documentary falls short. Given how much an entertainer The Notorious B.I.G. war – his strong presence is mentioned several times in the documentary, his image could have been used better.
Growing up, the rough parts of his early life, the breakthrough into music, his death (there are even a few surprising ones Clips with Biggie Singing): It’s all there for fans looking for the key elements that make up his life and legacy, but it feels familiar or too authorized.
It arguably equals, Biggie celebrating as an artist outside of music, but those parts that would have piqued the viewer’s curiosity sometimes feel rushed or even downplayed. « Biggie: I have a story to tell » isn’t swing-and-miss, but considering the impact it had on the music, the documentary asks for more.
The documentary is shorter than the biographical drama ‘ Notorious’ from 2009 and has a different focus. The document’s slogan is « Every legend has an origin story » and the rapper’s personal life is shown from his mother Voletta Wallace’s immigration from Jamaica to the transition of young Christopher from quiet Catholic school kid to street vendor before his album ‘Ready to Die’.
The more intimate or emotional moments can be felt when a no-nonsense Voletta speaks tenderly and adamantly of her son while shots jump on Biggie’s guilty expression for keeping things away from his mother. Their love is evident, and it’s clear that Biggie’s mom had a huge impact on his personal motivations for success.
