Barcelona will appoint a new president next month after Josep Maria Bartomeu’s resignation, and candidate Agusti Benedito has drastic plans for the La Liga giants
Barcelona’s famous Nou Camp stadium could be demolished if Agusti Benedito is appointed new president of the La Liga giants.
Barca are looking for a new president after Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned in poor form in October.
There are many names in the campaigning next month with Joan Laporta talking about his plans.
And now Benedito has taken up his ideas, including demolishing the Nou camp to create a more modern site.
« If we win the elections, we will build a new stadium, » said Benedito at an election presentation.
« We considered two options. The first is to knock down Camp Nou and build in the same place. That would mean playing in Montjuic for three years.
« The other option is to build a new stadium in Sant Joan Despi [the Barcelona training ground]. . If on 24. January, will be voted in the first year of our mandate in a referendum.
« This would be funded by selling the stadium’s naming rights for a period of 25 years. «
The current Nou-Camp was completed in 1957 and has hosted numerous important football matches, including a 1982 World Cup semi-final.
It was also the scene in which Manchester United completed their famous triple in 1999 after two goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
It has a capacity of just under 100. 000 and is already planning the renovation of the famous stadium.
