World News – CA – BC Election results: Janet Routledge leads NDP sweep in Burnaby

Burnaby’s four provincial ridings became NDP in 2017 – and Saturday night was no different

The battleground was to be Burnaby North, which the NDP took in 2017 after the Liberals won it in four consecutive elections

But it wasn’t even close After Saturday’s initial tally, Janet Routledge of the NDP led Liberal Raymond Dong by 3,291 votes

His margin of victory was huge Routledge had 7,410 votes, or 564 percent of the total Dong had 4,119 votes, or 313 percent, while Green Norine Shim had 1.6.11 votes, or 123 percent

« Part of my approach, my message, was that if you voted for the BC NDP, you vote for yourself, » said Routledge, who was the deputy NDP whip in the Horgan government

« This vote means you deserve a decent life, your family deserves a decent life, and your neighbors deserve a decent life. This is what I think this vote represents »

Anne Kang of the NDP took the win in Burnaby-Deer Lake, leading by 2,283 votes after Saturday’s count

Kang also had a great winning percentage, 552% against 325% for Liberal Glynnis Chan and 1234% for Green Mehreen Chaudry In terms of votes, Kang had 5,558, Chan had 3,275 and Chaudry had 1,244

Chen had 7,669 votes, or 581% of the vote, against 3,559 votes and 270% for the liberal Tariq Malik Andrew Williamson of the Greens had 1,737 votes and 132 percent Libertarian Dominique Paynter had 240 votes, or 18 percent

Burnaby Edmonds was the last Burnaby riding to post votes, but the NDP immediately came out on top and never looked back, with NDP Raj Chouhan leading the Liberal Tripat Atwal by 3,789 votes

Chouhan had 6,861 votes, or 612% of the total Atwal had 3,072 votes, or 274 percent, while Green Iqbal Parekh got 1,270 votes, or 113% of the total

The asterisk in the results so far is that around a fifth of registered voters in Burnaby have requested mail-in ballots, which will not be counted for 13 days Burnaby North received the most applications by mail, with 9,623 registered voters out of 43,418, or 222 percent Burnaby Lougheed received 8,530 applications, or 217% of 39,349 registered voters
