Toronto Public Health (TPH) on Friday sent MARBL, King Taps and Casa Mezcal – all located on King West – notices of closure for violating terms of the Health Protection and Promotion Act

King West restaurants must remain closed until they meet the conditions set out to stop the transmission of COVID-19

« TPH has found a disturbing link involving these places where many people are logged into more than one of the companies mentioned, » the city said in a statement « In some cases, for example, people infected with COVID-19 were employed in more than one of these locations »

One restaurant served buffet meals, which is not allowed by provincial regulations. The city said another company failed to cooperate with public health inspectors and was « significantly hampering investigative efforts «

« Staff were also found to work when sick or forced to work when sick, » the city said

Asked for comment, a restaurant spokesperson wrote in a statement that MARBL is cooperating with public health officials

« MARBL is fully complying with the ministry’s order and cooperated by closing our doors on Friday evening, » the statement read. « We have done everything in our power to protect staff and guests and now we must re-evaluate and work alongside public health to ensure a safe and speedy reopening We will keep everyone updated with all updates and the next step «

In an Instagram post on Saturday morning, King Taps said the restaurant is also cooperating with officials. He adds that patrons who visited on September 6, 9, 10 and 11 « may wish to contact Toronto Public Health «

« A deep cleaning of the restaurant is underway and a review of on-site practices and protocols is underway, » the statement read « We will work with Toronto Public Health to determine our reopening date »

The statement then lists specific measures taken by the restaurant to protect customers from the spread of COVID-19

We are temporarily closed The welfare of our customers and staff is our top priority and we are fully cooperating with Toronto Public Health To this end, a thorough cleaning of the restaurant is underway and a review of practices and protocols on site is in progress We will work with Toronto Public Health to determine our reopening date Guests who visited on September 6, 9, 10 and 11 may wish to contact the Toronto Public Health Department We strictly adhere to the health and safety guidelines set by government agencies and health authorities and have also taken extra steps to keep our restaurants safe. Specific measures that have been adopted include: seating groups six feet apart or with a physical barrier between tables, hand sanitizer is available throughout the restaurant, limiting group size to a maximum of ten tap and credit only for payment, and rigorous cleaning and kitchen protocols In addition, specific training procedures have been put in place for all staff

On Friday, Medical Officer of Health Eileen de Villa announced the closure of four ‘hotel-oriented’ establishments

Public health officials waited until owners were served before disclosing company names

MARBL was previously investigated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission in July after a video went viral showing a crowded party scene on the restaurant terrace

Anyone who has visited the bar and restaurant between September 10 and 17 should watch for symptoms
