EDMONTON – The Alberta government has decided to demolish a living wall in their listed federal building earlier than planned due to an insect infestation.
The United Conservative Government planned to remove the 223 square meters. Install a facility in the lobby of the Edmonton building in 2021 to reduce annual maintenance costs of $ 70. Save $ 000.
However, a spokeswoman for the Alberta Department of Service said an insect infestation was discovered a day or two ago and the government decided to order the immediate removal of the wall.
Tricia Velthuizen says the living wall was something beautiful that the province could no longer afford.
Adam Holder, a spokesman for the company that installed and maintained the wall in 2014, said the ivy and other tropical plants supplied fresh air to the building’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
He says he was disappointed to hear it had been removed as maintenance costs could have been easily reduced.
