World News – CA – Futuristic designs surface for Great Reef Coral Arch

Plans for the world’s first coral biobank in far north Queensland are one more step towards reality, with architectural designs revealed today

Tourism organizations say it will be a major asset for Port Douglas in far north Queensland

If built, the four-story Port Douglas Center, described as a ‘Noah’s Ark’ for the reef, would protect and raise around 800 species of coral from around the world

Architect Monica Earl said the building was designed to resemble mushroom coral and included an exhibition center, auditorium and research labs

It is also believed to harbor corals in hundreds of tanks with temperature and light controls

« The goal was to ensure the survival of the future of coral reefs, » Ms Earl said

« We got to thinking, ‘How do we keep corals comfortable in a building?’ which is an amazing new way of looking at architecture that usually always focuses on humans »

Ms Earl said the facility would also be an interactive space for visitors to see the corals and learn more about the reef

The project is being led by the non-profit organization Great Barrier Reef Legacy, which is seeking philanthropic support to fund the construction

Tourism Port Douglas Daintree CEO Tara Bennett said the bio-bank would be a major tourist attraction for the region

« This would really consolidate our position as the first destination to access the Great Barrier Reef, » said Ms. Bennett

« The big question is how to carry out the construction, but I think the time has come to think big about how tourism in the region will be in the future »

She said while COVID-19 has challenged the region’s tourism industry, she is confident about the future with a number of other major projects underway

As the Great Barrier Reef Legacy calls on investors to join us, divers will start collecting corals for the biobank next week
