World News – CA – Hospital workers march out in Calgary, across the province to protest UCP policies

Calgary hospital workers joined their colleagues in Alberta in a wildcat strike targeting UCP policies to expand healthcare privatization and lay off thousands of workers employees

The walkouts involving around 150 staff from Foothills Medical Center and 100 from the South Health Campus as well as Peter Lougheed Hospital were not ordered or organized by the union, an AUPE official said, but were a demonstration of challenge

This has led to the postponement of some surgeries and a redeployment of non-union staff to fill the loopholes created by the illegal actions, said Alberta Health Services

Workers who came out include nursing, maintenance and support staff, and orderlies, among others, the union said

« The members decided ‘enough is enough’ and we decided to fight back, » said AUPE vice-president Bobby-Jo Borodey, who was with picketers at Foothills

To criticize the withdrawal threatened patient safety, Borodey said UCP government policies during a pandemic were a greater risk

AUPE said announcement earlier this month of up to 11,000 layoffs amid restructuring of healthcare delivery was the last straw for workers

Outsourcing of laundry and cafeteria services is a big deal, but nurses insist that hundreds of their jobs are also at risk

« Support nurses decided today there was no choice but to fight to protect Albertans at risk, especially during the deadliest pandemic in a century In Constantly reducing public health care staff, this government is pushing our members to breaking point exactly when Albertans need it most, ”said Smith

The union leader could not say how long the walkouts will last, but on Monday morning, the Alberta health services had already requested a return to work order from the Labor Relations Board of the province

« As a direct result of this illegal professional action, some surgeries and outpatient clinics are postponed Patients will be contacted directly if their appointments are affected Visitors may be limited to some sites depending on the level of strike », AHS spokesman Kerry Williamson said in a statement on Monday morning

« We are doing our utmost to address any disruption in patient care caused by this illegal professional action. Our goal is to ensure that patients continue to receive the care and treatment they need »

While the walkouts are condemned by critics as a violation of the law, the New Democrat opposition says it is an inevitable response to the “illegal” UCP government’s measures to reduce healthcare costs and changes in benefits

« The UCP has repeatedly introduced illegal laws designed specifically to attack frontline healthcare workers, » said NDP Leader Rachel Notley

Changes to health care delivery expected to save $ 600 million after three years, according to the province, which has also been stuck in a dispute with doctors
