World News – CA – MUST SEE VIDEO: Window washers rescued from ledge on top of Midtown after platform divestment

Two workers had to be rescued from a ledge near the top of a downtown Toronto skyscraper on Thursday afternoon after the window washing platform they were standing on collapsed

Police said the two were working near the 18th floor of the Yonge Street apartment building, just south of Eglinton Avenue around noon, when their platform gave way and ended up falling several hundred yards

Both workers were wearing harnesses at the time and were briefly left suspended above the ground before firefighters helped them make their way to a ledge near the roof of the building

Parts of the dramatic rescue, which took place in about an hour, were captured in video obtained by CP24

The video shows a firefighter swinging a long rope with a loop at the end and hooking it to one of the washer’s legs. They then use the rope to bring the washer closer to the building, which allows them to stand up to using the rope attached to their harness

Cameras from CP24 also captured the final moments of the rescue after the two were safely on the ledge

In this footage, one of the men is seen standing sideways as firefighters smash the window. He is then handed a helmet and seen carefully backing into the opening while still strapped to his harness

« They both hit the same ledge and they were both basically saved thanks to their safety gear, » Toronto Fire District Chief Stephan Powell told CP24 as the rescue unfolded.

The window washing platform the men were on ended up landing on the sidewalk below, part of it extending into an alley along Yonge Street

Fortunately, no one who walked through the busy area was struck by the falling debris

“We get a good number of these calls every year and we are very fortunate that almost all of them end with a positive result,” Powell told CP24 “Fortunately we were able to break the glass to reach them In other circumstances our High angle rescue team sometimes have to go over a building and descend next to the window wash traps and transfer them to their safety lines before knocking them to the ground »

In a statement provided to CP24, a ministry spokesperson said the employer involved in the incident was Solar Window Cleaning
