Officials say there is no threat of tsunami in BC after 7A magnitude 5 earthquake detected off the coast of Alaska
In a statement just before 7 pm ET, BC Emergency Management said there was « no threat » to the province
The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred just before 5 p.m. ET on Monday, about 94 kilometers southeast of Sand Point
The magnitude of the earthquake fell from 74 to 75 just after 5:30 p.m. ET
The Alaska Earthquake Center said the quake was widely felt in communities along the south coast, including Sand Point, Chignik, Unalaska and the Kenai Peninsula
The center indicated a magnitude 52 aftershocks were reported 11 minutes later, centered in roughly the same area
Another 5 A magnitude 9 aftershock was recorded shortly after 6:20m ET about 136 kilometers southeast of Sand Point

« If you find yourself in this coastal area, move inland to higher terrain, » the warning reads
Global News chief meteorologist Anthony Farnell said a small tsunami appeared to have been generated after the earthquake
« Information is still coming in, but some of the buoys nearby are reporting tsunami activity, » he said
