Prince Harry has offered his support to those taking part in the London Marathon with the annual race going in an unusual way
Originally scheduled for April, the competition will take place today in the capital with only elite athletes running through the streets of London
The Duke of Sussex, who is also the patron of the London Marathon Charitable Trust, wished people good luck
He also thanked the participants for offering a « lifeline » to vulnerable people who suffered during the pandemic by raising funds for charities
No less than 45,000 people will still participate in the event by organizing their own 26Route of 2 miles
Participants can travel any distance in the world they want with people from 109 different countries expected to participate between midnight and 11:59 a.m.
World record holder Brigid Kosgei won the elite women’s race, defending her title in 2 h 18 min and 58 sec
Event director Hugh Brasher told PA: « It was all about inclusiveness, removing the pressure people can feel on the day of the event.
« There is a reason we have a cut, because we have to reopen roads, reopen London to get it back on track But that pressure is removed
« We are delighted to say that this is how we think the 40th race should be organized A celebration of success
« It’s always been part of the thinking It’s not the same as for the other 39 years For some people it’s better, for some people it’s not as good »
Catherine Woodhead, Managing Director of Muscular Dystrophy UK, is one of 117 people involved in helping the charity which has suffered huge losses this year
She is expected to walk 26 years old, 2 miles from her home in Chelmsford, Essex, and said she would not have felt able to participate in the event if it had been in central London
Those running the marathon in the capital are expected to encounter harsh weather conditions with the Met Office rain warning in place until noon
