MILAN (AP) – Cristiano Ronaldo continued his streak with two more goals when Juventus beat Cagliari 2-0 and finished second in Serie A on Saturday.
Juventus were one point below championship leaders AC Milan, who are visiting Napoli on Sunday. Third place, Sassuolo, is one point ahead of his game against Hellas Verona.
Atalanta and Lazio are among the four clubs with 14 points, three less than Milan. Lazio won 2-0 in Crotone on Saturday and Atalanta was surprisingly held 0-0 in Spezia.
Juventus attacked from the start and Federico Bernardeschi believed he had put his team in the lead early on, but that was ruled out as Álvaro Morata was sidelined in the build-up.
The hosts let the pressure count seven minutes before half-time when Morata found Ronaldo, who switched on from the left and shot into the bottom corner.
Ronaldo doubled his record four minutes later after Merih Demiral shot him a corner.
Juventus had chances to extend their lead in the second half, especially when Demiral went off the crossbar.
Ciro Immobile marked his recovery from the coronavirus with the aim of sending Lazio on its way to victory at the last Crotone.
Joaquín Correa scored second place for seventh place in Lazio. Crotone stayed in last place with just two points from their first eight games.
The Lazio game threatened to be postponed after heavy rains and flash floods in the region. But it went on, although the ball barely rolled and water splashed from the damp playing field as the players ran.
It was Immobile’s first game in nearly three weeks after being banned with COVID-19, which also kept him away from Italy’s three games.
Immobile had scored a goal in his last three games before he was released. Minute after an excellent cross from Marco Parolo opened the header with a header into the lower left corner.
Correa doubled Lazios lead in the 58. With a shot from an acute angle in the 16th minute after dribbling past Crotone defender Pedro Pereira and almost to the sideline.
Spezia had only won one of their last five games but almost took a surprising lead within the first two minutes when Diego Farias’ curious attempt hit the far post.
The guests almost won the game too late, but Spezia goalkeeper Ivan Provedel scored a stunning brace to play first Mario Pašalić and then Robin Gosens.
