World News – CA – South Korea expresses concern over missile launch in North Korean military parade

South Korea on Sunday urged North Korea to honor past disarmament commitments while expressing concerns over North’s unveiling of alleged new feature range missile during a military parade

During celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of its ruling party in Pyongyang on Saturday, North Korea paraded a variety of weapon systems, including two missiles that were first revealed to a foreign audience

One is what appeared to be an intercontinental ballistic missile larger than any known ICBM in the North, and the other would likely be an upgraded version of a missile that can be fired from submarines.

While some experts say they could be mock-up missiles in development, their revelations suggest North Korea has been pushing hard to boost its weapons capabilities amid a deadlock of nuclear diplomacy with the United States

The South Korean Defense Ministry said on Sunday it was expressing concerns that « North Korea has unveiled weapons, including what was suspected to be a new long-range ballistic missile A ministry statement called on North Korea to abide by the 2018 inter-Korean agreements aimed at reducing animosities

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry issued a separate statement urging North Korea to resume talks to advance its past commitment to achieve denuclearization and peace on the Korean Peninsula

After an emergency National Security Council meeting, council members in South Korea said they would continue to analyze the strategic importance of North Korean weapons systems revealed on Saturday and move into review of South Korea’s defense capabilities

During a speech at the military parade, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un warned he would fully mobilize his nuclear force if threatened but avoided direct criticism of Washington

The fact that Kim maintains his self-imposed moratorium on nuclear and long-range missile testing indicates that he still wants to keep chances of diplomacy with the U.S alive

But some experts say he will end up performing a major weapons test after the US presidential election in November to strengthen his influence in potential new negotiations with the US who wins the election
